Dental Crowns

Our Dentists provide patients Dental Crowns in Colorado Springs for a variety of reasons. The most common is to protect a tooth that is chippedcracked or so weakened from decay that it can no longer do its job without breaking entirely.

Crowns are also used to cover a tooth whose filling is so large that it takes up too much of the tooth, to restore a tooth that’s been worn down or broken and to support a bridge.
Dental crowns are also placed over implants to take the place of a tooth.
Even children can have dental crowns to protect their baby teeth.

What are Crowns Made of?
Nowadays, dental crowns in Colorado Springs can be made to blend in with the patient’s natural teeth so precisely that only they and the Woodmen Hills dentist know they are crowns. These crowns are most often made of porcelain or ceramic. Other, temporary crowns are made of stainless steel, and they’re worn only until a more natural looking crown is made to replace it. Children are fitted with stainless steel crowns. These crowns are placed over their baby teeth. When these teeth come out, so does the crown.

Crowns are also made of other metals, especially alloys of gold or platinum. There are also crowns made of cobalt chromium or nickel chromium. These Crowns are tough and long-lasting and resist breakage and chipping. The only thing that is wrong with them is that they obviously look like metal. This is why our Woodmen dentists usually put them on the back teeth.

A more natural looking crown is made of porcelain fused to metal. The drawback is that these crowns don’t wear as well as metal crowns, and the porcelain is brittle. Still, porcelain fused to metal crowns are a good choice for teeth in the front as well as the back. They also support long bridges because the metal makes them especially strong.

Dental crowns can be made of resin, but they don’t last as long as the others. Crowns made of all ceramic or porcelain are the most natural looking. They are also good for patients who are allergic to metal. Because they can be made to look so life-like, all porcelain or all ceramic crowns can be placed on all the teeth, including the front teeth.

How are Dental Crowns Made?
A patient will need to visit our Woodmen dentist at least twice to get a dental crown. First, the dentist examines the tooth and prepares it for the crown. This means taking X-rays to make sure the tooth is healthy enough to accept the crown without needing root canal therapy first. After that, the area around the tooth is numbed and the tooth is filed down to be able to accept the crown. Woodmen Hills Dentistry may need to build up the tooth if a lot of it is missing. Then, the dentist makes an impression of the tooth, either with putty or with a scanner. The impression is sent to the lab where the dental crown is created.
